Visit Saval Park on Isla Teja, Valdivia

Valdivia It has one of the most walkable and beautiful urban parks in the Los Ríos Region. We refer to the Saval park. We invite you to know why it is a place that you cannot miss if you travel to the city of Valdivia.

Origin of the park

The Saval park is located in Tile Island, an island surrounded by four rivers: Calle-Calle, Valdivia, Cau-Cau and Cruces. This park has its origins in a family of German immigrants, the Prochelles, who arrived in Valdivia in 1850 as part of a colonization process that would allow the area to be economically promoted.

The Prochelle family, owner of the land that the current park includes, built two imposing houses (recognized as a Historical Monument), created gardens with both introduced and native species, and built two artificial lagoons, famous to this day for their lotus flowers.

In 1944, the Agricultural and Livestock Society of Valdivia (SAVAL) acquired the land for the Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition of Valdivia, hence the park takes its current name. Years later, the property was transferred to the Municipality of Valdivia, which manages it to this day.

What will you find in the park?

The Saval Park is considered an urban recreational park, in which different activities can be carried out. It has trails for hiking, picnic areas and barbecue areas, canopy, children's games, sports areas, medialuna, horse rental and a sculpture park.

During the summer season, the area receives a large number of fairs, festivals and celebrations in the area, which makes it an unmissable place to visit with a group and family.

The Saval park is part of a natural environment of great ecological value. Large trees, such as beeches, lime trees, chestnut trees, European oaks and coigües of enormous dimensions, which are even older than the city itself. Trails with maqui, murta, sucker and digueñes give walkers the opportunity to discover and taste these wild products.

For bird lovers, this park offers a beautiful selection of species such as the concón, a kind of owl that lives in the deepest jungles; Cachañas and Araucanian pigeons and other native birds.

Taking a walk through the ponds with lotus flowers will be a unique experience, especially if you visit the park in the late spring and summer months, when the flowers are open. These lagoons are the ecosystems of the great Chilean frog, coipos and puyes, a characteristic fish of the Valdivia wetlands. The park has trails, walkways and viewpoints that allow you to appreciate, photograph and be part of certain points of the lagoons.
